ABSTRACT
The Foundation for the Rights of Future Generations in Germany argues that this lack of solidarity between generations is damaging for society, calling for a reform of the inheritance tax. The protests have increased public awareness by successfully reframing the issue as an intergenerational conflict instead of simply a political and ideological question. Beyond its political and economic ramifications, Brexit was also a symbol of the societal wounds caused by a brewing intergenerational conflict. The younger generation has often had the better ideas. Since childhood, Gen Zers have learned to become experts at dealing with insecurity and uncertainty; they are also able to consider our societal ills from a new and unencumbered perspective. From the point of view of Germany’s governing parties, the younger generation seems mostly to be the cause of problems. However, Fridays for Future has managed to place the fight against climate change at the top of the political agenda.
