ABSTRACT

This chapter is dedicated to exploring the urban resilience experience of the City and County of San Francisco, California, United States. Widely considered as a hub of innovation and technological progress, San Francisco manifests chronic problems related to socio-economic inequality and housing unaffordability. These are among the primary challenges discussed in the chapter, along with risks of sea-level rise, earthquakes, and overburdened urban infrastructure. Knowledge, technology, and funding related to urban resilience are explored as strategies of power in San Francisco. Local specificities, on the one hand, and global similarities on the other, are discussed.
