ABSTRACT

This brief section, which appears between chapters, is a case study in thinking with things. To understand the embodied learner, a closer look at a particular artifact or type of object can illuminate the interaction that evokes inquiry and learning. This Interlude focuses on a studio-style classroom created by the author for the purpose of supporting a thinking-with-things-pedagogy that serves the embodied learner far better than the conventional classroom. The origins of the classroom and its features are described, along with some of its animating philosophy. The classroom, while used by other faculty too, particularly supported the teaching of a course called “Designing the Future World,” described in Interlude E.
