ABSTRACT

This chapter describes some of the main cognitive and emotional factors that contribute to sexual difficulties, in order to provide the client with appropriate and sufficient information around sex and support her through processing and shifting her feelings around it. Unrealistic expectations around sex, in addition to the role sexual arousal plays, are discussed. The common myths around sexuality are challenged and adapted. Next, the chapter explores how shame and disgust contribute to negative sexual experiences and offers suggestions on how to help the client create more neutral and positive associations. Finally, the potential effects of sexual abuse and trauma on the client are brought to light.
