ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on helping the client build some of the individual qualities that the author has observed support the client in feeling more empowered and relaxed. Vaginismus is firstly explored from a philosophical manner in terms of how it is serving the client. The perspective shifts from viewing it as dysfunctional to understanding its functionality. The concepts of control and boundaries are explored via the lens of assertiveness, and practical tools are given for the clinician to help the client practice that skill. Learning to live and connect more authentically is another theme that is discussed, followed by the importance of letting go of inhibitions that are not serving the client, thus allowing for a healthy balance of vulnerability and boundaries.
