ABSTRACT

In addition to providing a detailed overview of the book's structure and the progression of the contents of its five chapters, the introductory chapter describes the book's general purpose and its intended audience. The chapter also explicates the meaning of quantitative reasoning and conceptual coherence that constitutes two conceptual threads running throughout the chapters. In this book, these two terms have very specific meanings that are distinct from how they are often used in general. Moreover, the chapter explicates the important roles that quantitative reasoning and conceptual coherence can play in stochastic thinking and learning when quantification and quantities are an explicit and sustained focus of learning and instruction.
