ABSTRACT

One of the key driving forces behind the ideas in this book was a theoretical model initially established by a primary/secondary school languages development project, with which Wendy was involved – Accelerated Modern Languages Acquisition (AMLA). The aim of this project was to provide an accessible and consistent approach to how teachers can deliver a progressive and holistic embedded language curriculum. The AMLA approach is underpinned by three key aspects of language: language as communication; language as culture; and language as identity. The team used the AMLA model to develop a language awareness programme, a thematic Scheme of Work for Key Stage 2 and cross-phase transition projects. These resources were disseminated to schools through a programme of professional development opportunities and through free access to materials via an online portal, and project outcomes and resources were shared through an Association for Language Learning Conference Presentation. The chapter also presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in this book.
