ABSTRACT
There are four key sections in this first chapter: Conscious perception: building on early awareness; Knowledge about language; Language use: a shift in focus; and The role of the teacher. Examples are provided of how to promote and build language awareness across the curriculum, and there is a focus on how this awareness is of benefit to native speakers and those with English as an additional language.
