ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on two key themes, both of which are central to the idea of an inclusive approach to language learning. Firstly, we examine why it is important to maximise children’s existing language skills and ensure that we build on these. We then put forward the argument that, by taking a bilingual approach to learning and teaching, planning and resourcing, a more inclusive ethos will be achieved, where a celebration of language and multilingualism is embedded in everyday practices, enhancing the lives of all children.
