ABSTRACT

This chapter examines aspects of the complexity that lies behind ideas relating to language, culture and identity, and we argue that an understanding of this complexity, and of how we can use it in empowering ways, is vital to all educators. One of the key messages we hope to convey is that a school ethos which puts language, culture and identity at the forefront of its considerations for all staff, children, their families and the local community, will provide 7a more safe, supportive, nurturing, creative, inclusive, innovative and forward-thinking environment, where learners thrive and flourish.
