ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we consider how the pro-social and language-aware classroom can mitigate the potentially damaging impact of gender discrimination, bias and gender stereotyping on a child’s developing sense of identity. Ideas relating to grammatical gender, gendered language, gender-inclusive language and social gender will be explored, as well as potential issues including false gender-neutrality and the impact of misgendering. Practical responses and approaches will be discussed and a set of prompts provided to support gender-inclusive teaching.
