ABSTRACT

This chapter is built around three principles taken from the Expert Subject Advisory Group for Modern Languages (2015), focusing on assessment that fosters motivation, enjoyment and progress in language learning. These principles also include ensuring that assessment enables learners to feel confident through building resilience, enthusiasm and persistence. This involves embedding assessment into the language learning process and recognising that the learning of a language includes making mistakes, whilst having high expectations of learners. Throughout the chapter, we suggest ways that we might assess progress, adhering to these principles and looking beyond the more traditional methods of formative and summative assessment.
