ABSTRACT
This chapter establishes whether any validity could be found for the theoretical claims made by the theory of foregrounding. Although generally the data provided support in favour of the theoretical model, the exact nature of Ss' responses to foregrounding configurations was not yet well enough accounted for. Three different areas of research were selected for this investigation. Two of these are concerned with the Ss' responses to FG configurations, while one examines the interrelationship between responses found in earlier experiments, and textual structure. The latter was tested through a multiple regression analysis, the former two by means of a multiple choice test and a test using Osgood's semantic differential. Each of these will be discussed in turn. The outcome of such a regression analysis allows one to deduce which of the theoretical variables had the strongest impact in helping to determine the informants' responses.
