ABSTRACT

It should be remembered that data were collected to gain further insight into the processes that are at work when readers are confronted with foregrounding in a text. In the experiment, the directionality of the scales was randomized, in order to counterbalance any possible effect due to standardized ordering. For the poem by Roethke, the picture is less clear, in the sense that many more cases may be observed that conflict with the assumption that a relationship might exist between FG and qualitative statements by readers. For the Rossetti poem one notices a strong clustering of the lines, but in general the direction of the oppositions between FG lines and BG lines corresponds to the predictions. When the results of both groups are compared it is clear that removing FG from the poems had in general a quite marked effect: group medians for original and for altered lines differ in most cases.
