ABSTRACT

This chapter provides narrative context to the data through numerous case vignettes that illuminate the modern serial murderer. The case vignettes are organized by perpetrator type (traditionally defined serial murderers, two-victim serial murderers, serial-spree murderers, female serial murderers, team-based serial murderers, multiple-event murderers, caregivers, potential serial murderers, serial shooters, survivalists), motive (anger, psychosis, ideology (extremist violence and racial hatred), enjoyment (thrill, excitement, and power), criminal enterprise (professional contracts, drug trafficking), and case-specific factors (technology, serial murderers who refused to “age out,” parolees, extensive criminal histories, warehousing victim’s remains, victimizing fellow inmates, military service, victims as collateral damage, “prolific” status).
