ABSTRACT

This chapter overviews noteworthy environmental exhibitions staged in museums and public galleries in Europe, United Kingdom, United States and Australia since the beginnings of land art in the late 1960s. The exhibitions discussed have been selected for their scope, scale and, most importantly, for the curatorial characteristics that define them as precursors of the new wave of biennales investigated in subsequent chapters. Key exhibitions discussed are Earthworks (USA, 1968), Earth Art (USA, 1969), documenta 1982 and Bienanle of Sydney 1984 (Joseph Beuys, 7000 Oaks), Radical Nature: Art and Architecture for a Changing Planet 1969–2009 (UK, 2009), Earth: Art of a Changing World (UK, 2009), In the Balance: Art for a Changing World (Australia, 2010), Ends of the Earth: Land Art to 1974 (USA, 2012), Eco-Visionaries: Confronting a Planet in a State of Emergency (UK, 2019) and Down to Earth (Germany, 2020).
