ABSTRACT

Chapter 2 covers elementary material on the individual stringed instruments: the violin, the viola, the violincello (cello), and the double bass. It should be apparent, even from this brief discussion, that writing for strings is a special technique. What looks easy to the pianist may prove surprisingly awkward for the string player, while there are fine string parts that would be totally impractical for woodwind or brass instruments. There is a good deal to be learned about combining the stringed instruments to make up a string orchestra.
