ABSTRACT

In this case example the focus is on working with the existential themes of paradox, self-esteem, emotion, and relatedness. The supervisee brings to supervision a client who is faced with reassessing his sense of self and addressing the paradoxes and contradictions in what he wants to achieve.

The supervisor works with the supervisee to identify the client’s paradoxes and to find ways to present them to the client in a way which enables the client to identify what is most meaningful for him. Through this engagement with the paradoxes the client identifies that relatedness is more important to him than career success and so he is able to identify the future pathway which is more likely to help him focus his authentic attention on his relationship with others.
