ABSTRACT
Chapter 2 provides a basic background for teachers about the English writing system to help provide a foundation for what writing is, how letter-sounds are (typically) organized, and how the English alphabetic system works. The 44 English phonemes are discussed, major categories of letter-sounds that are taught to children are specified, and key literacy terms (e.g., phoneme, vowel, consonant) are identified and defined for the reader.
