ABSTRACT

Chapter 4 focuses on the Print Conventions domain of the Head Start Early Learning Outcomes. This includes information on how children develop concepts of print and concept of word, explaining what these are and why they are important to foster in developing readers. The importance of teaching and understanding concepts of print in addition to phonological awareness and alphabet instruction are discussed. Lastly, two research-based practices for instructing preschoolers in this area, shared reading and interactive writing, are explained.
