Research indicates that highly effective leadership preparation programs have distinguishable program features associated with impactful leadership practice. Pedagogy, a key element of program rigor and relevance, provides another excellent example of how to distinguish between more and less effective programs. In addition to developing a working knowledge of the research on leadership preparation, leaders of program design or redesign are required to have knowledge of and skill in facilitating the process of change. Internal needs assessments can focus on a variety of issues from program capacity to program processes. In even the most effective preparation programs, examining the current reality will reveal multiple areas for focus and improvement.
