ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the current state of faculty development in most institutions, ways to support faculty learning and the importance of building a culture of learning and improvement. The new faculty orientation seminar at the University of Texas-Austin, for example, intentionally connects new faculty to the teaching center. The orientation includes a teaching workshop, an invitation to join other seminars and new faculty leave the orientation with several books on teaching and assessing learning. One really important way to support faculty learning and their use of quality resources is having teaching support available. Program directors, department chairs, and other leaders within colleges and schools of education can support the development of a culture of learning in their programs and departments. Understanding organizational change, how to facilitate it, and how to support one's colleagues through the process is an important skill for program leaders.
