ABSTRACT

This chapter highlights what is known about exemplary internships, explores supportive elements and factors that point to coherence between the internship and other program elements. It provides preparation program examples and guiding questions to support educational leadership faculty's team to collaboratively shape field-based learning. The chapter begins with —the purpose of field-based learning—developing leaders whose practice leads to equitable outcomes. Coursework occurs simultaneously with the internship and all major assignments require application of research and knowledge in authentic field-based practice. University of Washington Danforth candidates conduct an equity audit, compose a cultural portrait, lead an inquiry project, foster equitable community engagement, and assess resource deployment in the authentic contexts of their internship organization. University of Illinois at Chicago candidates are tasked with leading authentic inquiry embedded within their field-based learning where they lead an ongoing, iterative process of organizational change that impacts teacher practice and PK-12 student learning.
