ABSTRACT

A growing body of evidence demonstrates the link between leadership preparation and practice, lending strength to the assertion that “leaders need a particular set of skills and professional practices that will enhance their ability to navigate what are often turbulent waters when social justice and issues of diversity and equity are grounding their work”. Given the important role that education leader’s play in supporting PK-12 student learning, the continuous improvement and redesign of leadership preparation has also captured the interest of funders. In an effort to foster the development of highly effective leadership preparation programs, University Council for Educational Administration conceptualized a collaborative process for program planning. The descriptor “collaborative” is used in the title of this process purposefully, as curriculum design for education leadership preparation should not be a solo journey. Leadership programs and the institutions within which they are housed are diverse. The chapter also presents an overview on the key concepts discussed in this book.
