ABSTRACT

Chapter 7 brings together the overall findings of the book and highlights a number of areas of conflict between stabilization, the UN’s approach to international peace and security, and human security. The chapter draws out the conflict between the two competing sides of stabilization practice uncovered in the case studies. First, the chapter discusses the rise in militarisation and the use of robust force. Second, the chapter examines the close engagement of the UN and the host state and the impact of counter-terrorism activities. Third, the chapter looks at the peacebuilding activities, such as the rule of law and empowerment strategies found in the missions, which can be seen as an embodiment of human security. The militarised approach and rhetoric threaten to undermine the peacebuilding activities which are akin to human security.
