ABSTRACT
This chapter describes an additional set of ten essential skills for academic writing and the linguistic resources and strategies for performing them. These skills are defining, exemplifying, classifying/categorizing, describing, explaining, referencing visuals, comparing/contrasting, entertaining opposition, recommending, and connecting. Like the six skills discussed in Chapter 3, they enable writers to engage in complex cognitive and semiotic work characteristic of advanced literacy practices.
