ABSTRACT

The sixth chapter is braced for giving a detailed account of Sir Syed’s sustained effort of spreading intellectual awakening among Muslims and asking them to eschew their traditional and irrational outlook. Through his periodicals, The Loyal Mohammedans of India (1860), The Aligarh Institute Gazette (1866), Tahzibul Akhlaq (1870), and The Pioneer, a leading newspaper of the North-West Province, Sir Syed urged the readers to change their worldview. He meticulously espoused the idea of a ‘gentleman’ or civilised man who is not guided by emotions. His newspapers played a leading role in propagating the concept of civil society and human rights.
