ABSTRACT

In Cotswold District the rural housing profiles were labelled agricultural, retirement, poor housing, local authority housing and armed forces. Pensioners and single-pensioner households were naturally found in the Cotswold retirement profile and also the agricultural and poor housing profiles of that area. The position of disadvantage of the agricultural profile is maintained when proportions of households with low incomes are assessed, but the Cotswold armed forces profile records a higher proportion of low-income households than does the Cotswold poor housing profile. Private unfurnished tenancies were recorded at high levels in the Cotswold estate villages and in the traditional rural profile. Unfit houses and households lacking amenities were concentrated in the poor housing profiles, but were also well represented in the traditional rural profile in South Oxfordshire. If the rural housing profiles are ranked according to the negative and positive attributes a rough scale of housing deprivation and advantage may be constructed.
