ABSTRACT

Reversing the idea of 'cascading' strategies down the hierarchy, developing a strategic narrative integrates multiple contributions into a coherent whole. The unifying factors are common purpose, shared values, clarity of vision, and trust in people to do a good job. Many people have experienced an awakening of values in the COVID-19 pandemic, making it possible and necessary to look again at vision and even to reconsider their purpose. In this chapter, the author looks at how their leadership develops shared visions, within the context of meaning provided by their common sense of purpose. Using sticky notes or similar medium, use the people imagination to describe what success looks like. The epitome must be a full statement with a verb and ideally with a subject. The two ends of the rung are mutually relevant and the people should write a new epitome that resolves the tension between the two, which will be the ideal future.
