ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the typical organizational structure of tea estates and span of management have been described in a betting manner. The composition of labors under different categories has been delineated. Finally, existing procurement practices and policies of labor have been furnished.

The span of management refers to the number of subordinates a superior has under his direct supervision. The study has found that the span of control over subordinates is very poor in the region. Generally, in tea plantations, the general manager has control over the Factory Manager and Plantation Manager. One or more assistant or junior managers perform their works under the supervision of the factory manager. Similarly, in the case of the plantation (field), one or more assistant or junior managers are supervised by the field manager. The manager of any tea plantation is acknowledged as Bara Saheb and the assistant managers are popularly called as Chota Saheb. There is a group of staff among the workers to assist the assistant managers who are commonly referred to as Babu.

Recruitment and selection are one of the imperative steps in the procurement process of the management of human resources. The success of the business fundamentally depends on the temperament of human resources deployed. The study has found conventional procurement practices in the tea estates of the North Bengal region.
