ABSTRACT

In this chapter, two important aspects of human resource management, which are training and compensation, have been discussed. In case of training of the Indian tea industry, different aspects of training for tea labor, such as modes of training, areas of training, etc., have been highlighted. Further, existing compensation policies and practice of tea labur have been presented elaborately. Modes of wage payment, calculation of incentives, payments of bonuses, etc. have been rigorously discussed. Statistical analysis has been made to comprehend existing wage issues. It has found that the amount of wage paid to the workforce is abysmally low. The amount of wage is much lower than the stipulated wage rate as prescribed by the International Labour Organization. There is no standard procedure for the calculation of incentives. The pattern of wage growth is not systematic in nature; it is random. The study has established a direct political link on the determination of wage rate. The ruling political party decides the amount of wage, not through provisions of the Minimum Wage Act, 1948.
