ABSTRACT

The coronavirus pandemic first infected people in urban areas and then spread to rural sectors. Urban areas are connected through global networks. People first spread the disease to others during international travel, starting in China, spreading to Europe and North America, and then to the rest of the world. The field of economic geography addresses where economic activity occurs and why. Businesses locate where workers live and workers want to live where businesses operate. The conditions that lead to the core-periphery pattern are considered pecuniary externalities , which occur when the actions of an economic agent cause a change in market conditions. Manufacturing is characterized by a modest use of land and increasing returns to scale. Agriculture is characterized by an intensive use of land and constant returns to scale. The distribution of agricultural production depends on the availability of suitable land. Centripetal and centrifugal forces influence the outcome.
