ABSTRACT

This chapter engages the challenge of incorporating an intercultural focus in Chinese as a foreign language education. I first briefly review intercultural trends in Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language (TCFL). Then I explore the notion of intercultural competence in foreign language education and the pedagogy to develop it. Following that, I demonstrate that TV drama can be useful intercultural learning material as I discuss L2 learners’ intercultural interpretation of a selected TV drama clip. Finally, I explore how to use TV drama for intercultural teaching through examining the teaching challenges of the three cultural themes – face, relationships, and education – by guiding and explaining cognitive knowledge and guided practice based on the nature of learning.
