ABSTRACT

This chapter showcases the use of mindfulness-based practices for elderly participants to improve their overall quality of life by embracing positivity in general. Mindfulness, being a unique quality of consciousness, involves a receptive awareness of ongoing internal states, behaviour, and external realities. Mindfulness training encourages individuals to bring an attitude of warmth and kind curiosity to whatever they experience in terms of thoughts, feelings, and body sensations – from moment-to-moment. It thus helps individuals to let what is the case be the case. Mindfulness is also based on the few Noble Truths which form the essence of Buddhism. Mindful practices have been found to have an intricate relationship with neurophysiology. Mindfulness practices are often taught to elderly individuals with a variety of conditions and in a variety of settings. Mindfulness meditation is yet another practice which may be applicable for the elderly. Mindfulness meditation is also termed opening-up meditation practice.
