ABSTRACT

The current world is witnessing a sensational surge of human longevity resulting in conceptualizations of ageing. Several concepts and theories colour the canvas of gerontology. Concepts of ‘conscious ageing,’ ‘contemplative ageing,’ ‘spiritual practices,’ and ultimately stepping into the realm of ‘transcendence’ seem to be a brighter avenue to tread on during the extended years of life. Conceptualizations of ageing have evolved significantly over a few decades. The essential features of spiritual journeys are elements of commitment, self-discipline, and regular spiritual practice. The regularity in spiritual practices leads to the development of habits of both mind and body and the habit of ‘being’ that comes naturally. Gerontology is the scientific study of ageing and old age. Transpersonal psychology embraces as its primary mission the attempt to better understand and experience the part of the person that lies beyond personality, individuality, ego, acculturation, and social beliefs that envelop the totality of the whole person in terms of mind, body, soul, and spirit.
