ABSTRACT

The signature philosophy of gerontologists is that ‘it is better to wear out than to rust out.’ Leisure seems to be the key ingredient in improving the quality of life among ageing adults owing to its mental engagement facilities. Ageing is a receding lifeline of human beings. The decline in strength and resources are a natural phenomenon. The better side of ageing is maturity, integrity, and a whole-life-unlimited knowledge point. An ageing population is considered to be a reflection of human appreciation and the tryst with nature. The benefits of leisure are multivariate – enhanced social skills, improved physical fitness, and intellectual alertness. Leisure activities among the elderly are not only restricted to any single social class or strata. Leisure activity participation can have a ‘snowball effect,’ in that participation can lead to enhanced psychological well-being and life satisfaction, which, in turn, can lead to greater involvement in other activities.
