ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the nuances of retirement from a developmental perspective so that senior individuals may engage in self-realizations leading to actualization by adopting a sound philosophy in life. Many retirees are challenged by the demand to replace their earlier work routine with a new structure in retirement. Retirement often prompts a life review. It enables the individual to adopt a perspective as well as a retrospective view towards life in general. Retirees often experience choice dilemma in the fact that they may not trust their ability to make appropriate decisions and end up in decision paralysis. Retirees may experience a phase of grieving once the initial excitement of the transition is over if such individuals were more or less satisfied with their work life. Industrious retirees may still engage in different missions like part-time employment, hobbies, recreational activities, coaching, teaching, and mentoring to keep themselves occupied.
