ABSTRACT

Chapter 5 concentrates on the acquisition and use of tense and aspect in English, first, by considering native speakers of English (i.e., L1 learners), and second, by discussing different non-native speakers of English (i.e., L2 learners) in general. As before, this chapter additionally considers each of the relevant languages individually, by outlining case studies on how German, Russian, Turkish, and Vietnamese learners of English acquire tense and aspect. In the final section, the main points are summarized and discussed in relation to each other. These L1 and L2 perspectives are the necessary basis to understand the remainder of the study, where the focus lies on how L3 learners of English acquire, and ultimately use, tense and aspect in their foreign language.
