ABSTRACT

Chapter 7 is the first of two results chapters. It presents the linguistic analysis of the written and spoken learner corpus. The use of tense and aspect of all learner groups (mono- and bilingual foreign language learners of English, as well as English native speaker control groups) is reported and compared to assess whether there are differences or similarities across the learners that can be explained by language group membership. First, a general overview of text composition and verb usage is provided, followed by discussions of the use of the progressive aspect and present versus past time reference. These sections are exclusively based on the written data. The final section of the chapter compares the written and spoken English production. A short summary concludes this chapter.
