ABSTRACT

This chapter contains background information on land grabbing in Afghanistan, including its definition in Afghan law and/or other sources, after a cursory look at a global definition of land grabbing. The chapter discusses how land grabbing has been dealt with in practice, as well as the relatively recent land grabbing law and a variety of policy documents. It also emphasizes the involvement of individuals, primarily powerful warlords and government officials, who have been linked to widespread land theft. This chapter is mostly based on desk research and documents gathered during fieldwork.
