ABSTRACT

Over the lifespan, the need for connection with others shapes people's neural architecture, their responses to stress, their everyday emotional lives, and the interpersonal dramas and dilemmas that are at the heart of those lives. Attachment is a science of understanding human behavior, which makes sense when viewed in the context of attachment. The science of attachment provides a comprehensive account for understanding why humans seek and maintain close emotional bonds with others and why these bonds are so important. Thanks to technological advancement, attachment researchers have been able to actually see what happens inside the brain and the body during moments of attachment distress. Brain scan technology has allowed people to explicitly see that attachment is wired into their survival instincts. Emotions have physical cues in their bodies that help people tune into their experiences in the world and deem them as safe or dangerous. Emotions are their threat-detection system signaling the survival part of the brain.
