ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an in-depth discussion about the use of rhythms, rocking, song, and dance to soothe and engage the young child and caregivers. The discussion includes how the field of music therapy uses rhythm and song with medical populations, as well as the role of dance, music, and rhythmic activities used around the world to both soothe and engage babies. Specific techniques that provide joyful ways for parents to play with their babies while learning how to attune to their unique styles of relating, which may be affected by their medical condition, are exemplified. The vignettes throughout this chapter exemplify the use of rhythm, song, music, and dance in pediatric medical dance/movement therapy.
