ABSTRACT

Livestock raising is considered a profitable activity in the view of the Bedouins, because in addition to providing them with food, skins, wool and goat-hair, it enables them to fulfil obligations of social and religious ceremonies, and strengthens their feeling of being Bedouin. Basem adopted a systematic approach for achieving an optimal pregnancy rate, in addition to what was explained in the beginning of the chapter. Needless to say, it was not the author's intention to show an economic advantage of one system over the other because conditions are changing all the time and there are great differences in, for example, the size of the family, the size of the flock, and in employment. It is important to point out that the Bedouin go through climatic, political and ecological changes, the process of urbanisation, variety of employment and the acquisition of education.
