ABSTRACT

The services of eight or nine carpenters, on the other hand, are in constant demand for directing and supervising village building operations, such as the erection of dwellings, clubs, and schools. Probably these men possessed innate ability, but they also had to be trained. Canoe building is an activity for the hours of leisure rather than a full-time occupation. Deserving members of the senior generation continue to enjoy the respect of the rest of the community, and even the most futile is treated with courtesy. Old people always work for as long as it is physic ally possible for them to do so, though they usually take a long rest in the shade during the hottest part of the day. When at last death comes the ceremonies are more elaborate than those heralding the birth of an infant. The whole village attends to mourn the passing, nowadays almost the only occasion when Busama-Lutu and Busama-Awasa unite.
