ABSTRACT

The district of Karasjok is in the eastern part of East-Finnmark. To the south and east it borders on Finland, to the west on Kautokeino, and it covers an area of 2,840 square miles. Most of the landscape consists of bare, open mountain heaths interspersed with numerous large and small lakes, streams, rivers and swamps. The natural scenery is magnificent with the quiet river surrounded by gently sloping wooded hills. The church and a number of houses lie close together with small patches of cultivated land between them. There is a bridge across the river and some people live on the other side also. The wild reindeer were still important although not so abundant as before, and there was much other game, and abundant fish in the lakes and rivers. All the Sames in Karasjok had their outfarms in the old days.
