ABSTRACT
The 1946 census returns (published in December 1949) give the Native population of the Tawana Reserve as 38,724 (of whom 338 were absentees outside the Protectorate on the date of the census). In the preliminary returns (1947) the total was given as 41,707, made up of the 94following ethnic groups: Tawana 8,124 Koba 13,261 Damara 5,798 Mbukushu 5,286 Sarwa 3,704 Kgalagadi 1,918 Geereku 1,513 Rotse 744 Kalaka 728 Subia 486 Tebele 1 103 Sotho 42
