ABSTRACT

This tribe, as already noted, 1 is an offshoot from the Seleka-Rolong living at Thaba Nchu in the Orange Free State. It reached the Tati District in 1899, and in 1908, when the first attempt was made to establish a local Native Reserve, it was given its own location in the north-eastern corner along the Ramokgwebana River. Many Kalaka and other Shona were already living there, and henceforth they were regarded as subjects of the Rolong chief. The population of the location was returned in the 1946 census as 1,108, and the number of taxpayers in 1943 was 290.
