ABSTRACT

The total area under cocoa, including young farms not in bearing, was 1968 acres, and if this had been compactly planted round, the village it would form a circle with a radius of between 1 and 1½ miles. The cocoa farms, however, were fairly evenly distributed over a circle of 3 miles radius round the village. These families number 175, and 172 of them owned all the cocoa in the village. The non-indigenous families owned no cocoa but were employed as caretakers or labourers on the cocoa farms, or were engaged in occupations other than farming. Apart from cocoa farms in the village, ten farmers owned thirteen farms in other villages. From these farms 350 loads of cocoa were produced, mostly by caretakers, about 200 loads accruing to the farmers. After deducting travelling and other expenses, and considering the family ties in respect of which farmers generally assumed obligations, net income brought back to village was considered to be small.
