ABSTRACT

The information on costs and earnings from the non-bearing cocoa farms, which are all food farms at first, is much less exact, because harvesting is not a complete operation except in crops such as corn, the food crops being taken as and when required. Furthermore, the yield from any farm, is not necessarily the total possible, as food crops much in excess of requirements are frequently wasted because they are not harvested. The total area of the non-bearing cocoa farms under food crops was 951 acres, and this supported the population of about 1181 persons, excluding the relatively small amount of foodstuffs brought in the village. From about 80% of the food farms crops were gathered for one or more years, whilst in the remainder no food crops were taken, the farms being allowed for one reason or another to grow up into bush from the first year.
