ABSTRACT

Cocoa farming is the preponderant occupation, and four agricultural classes may be recognised. Most farmers own their farms independent of any landlord, ownership passing to the next of kin. Out of the adult population of 352 males and 322 females, all the men except two were farmers or had some other occupation. Except in the case of one shoemaker, the 89 caretakers and the 24 labourers were all engaged solely in farming. The total number of adults, both male and female, engaged in occupations other than farming was 133, and of these 67 were also farmers. The other 66 were engaged solely in the non-farming occupation, and of these only 6 were heads of families. Hunting was carried on generally in the forest surrounding the village, away from the farms. Certain animals are known as MOAPON or big game, and include the deer family, bush-cow, bush-pig, porcupine and armadillo.
